Used to monitor thyroid and adrenal support
• Goal: averages for five days vary no more than 0.2°F or 0.1°C
• Stable averages indicate well-supported adrenals
• Optimal thyroid is averages 98.5-98.6°F or 37°C
Method
• Use mercury or Geratherm® thermometer (digitals are unreliable)
• Sit quietly for at least 15 minutes before taking oral temps
• Do not eat, drink or smoke during quite time
• Leave thermometer in for approximately ten minutes
• Take oral temperature three times each day
• first temperature is three hours after waking
• second temperature is six hours after waking
• third temperature is nine hours after waking
• Each day, average the three temperatures,and round to one decimal

Elevated temperatures
Hypothyroid individuals typically have low body temperature reflecting
their reduced metabolism. However, temperatures can be falsely
elevated from several imbalances. This includes low iron, high
progesterone, low aldosterone, low sodium and high cortisol. If
infection is the cause of high temperatures, it will generally show up in
a white blood count.
Temperatures and the menstrual cycle
The normal hormonal swing of the menstrual cycle will change the
level of temperature but not its stability. Optimal temps will be 98.6
degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celcius) daily average during the first
two weeks of the cycle and then increase on the day of ovulation.
Following ovulation and until menstruation begins, many women run
temps of 99 (37.2) due to increased progesterone. The effect of the
menstrual cycle for a particular woman will be understood by tracking
and charting temperatures over time.
